Tension as NPP Western North Chairman Race Decided by 15-Vote Margin; Ballot Box Nearly Snatched

The New Patriotic Party’s Western North Regional Chairman election ended in high drama on Sunday 16 August, 2026 after the winner emerged with just a 15-vote margin, sparking a near incident of ballot box snatching at the collation centre, John Bitar Club House at Sefwi Dwenease

Hon. Pouis Oheneba Abakah was declared the new Western North Regional Chairman after polling 100 votes to beat his closest contender, Mr. McDaniels Nyame, who secured 85 votes Madam Martha Kwayie Manu obtained 9 votes.

The election, which brought together NPP delegates from across the region, was tense from the start. According to eyewitnesses, supporters of one of the losing candidates attempted to disrupt the counting process and allegedly made moves to snatch the ballot box when it became clear the race was going to be close.

Security personnel and party officials intervened swiftly, restoring calm and allowing the process to be completed without further incident. No injuries or damage to election materials were reported.

Speaking after his victory, Hon. Pouis Abakah thanked delegates for the confidence reposed in him and called for unity in the region.

“This was a contest of ideas, not enemies. The 15-vote difference shows that every delegate matters. I urge all of us to come together and work for the NPP in Western North,” he said.

Political observers say the close result reflects growing competition within the NPP at the regional level, and will test the new executive’s ability to unite the party base.

The Regional Elections Committee has assured that all results have been duly recorded and that grievances, if any, should be channeled through the party’s laid-down structures.
